At Studio Yindi we have almost daily visits from 3 kookaburras, Kevin, Katie and Kim, They enjoyed small snacks of mostly fresh meat. They enjoy chicken, beef, pork or fish but we only give them very small amounts, cut up small each time. Hard cheese is a possible substitute if you don’t have fresh meat.
We are happy to invite our Airbnb guests to watch them being fed on our Level 2 balcony. Their breakfast is typically between 07:00 and 08:00. Their evening snack is served about 17:00. Let us know if you want to see them up close and we will let you know when they arrive.
The birds take time to learn new faces and build up the necessary trust. I find it possible to feed them by putting a small piece of food on the back of my hand, then approaching them slowly, quietly while they sit on the balustrade. Guests who approach them quietly and calmly can often be successful too.
In winter they are likely to sit there for 20 – 30 minutes afterwards as our balcony is a good lookout post for more food and any competing bird life. Sometimes they turn up with dirt inside their beak, showing they have been digging for a worm in the soil.
Dont be surprised if they don’t all turn up every day. They have probably found another reliable food source. Young birds may also leave their family group and mate permanently with another bird of their opposite gender.

There are lots of videos on YouTube about people feeding kookaburras for you to watch until you arrive at Studi Yindi. The following video lets you hear their unique laughing call. They use it to assert ownership of their home territory, warning other groups of kookaburras that they are trespassing on them.
